Salmonella Outbreak Tied to August Egg Company Organic Eggs: CDC Report

Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Specific Brand of Organic Eggs

Source of the Outbreak

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified organic eggs from August Egg Company as the source of a recent Salmonella outbreak. The outbreak has affected at least 79 people across seven states in the western and midwestern U.S., with 21 hospitalizations reported.

The contaminated eggs, specifically brown organic and free-range brown eggs, were distributed between February and May, with approximately 1.7 million eggs sold through retail stores in Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, and Wyoming. A large-scale recall of the affected products is currently underway.

Symptoms and Safety Recommendations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published detailed information on its website, including the brand name, production plant codes, and Julian dates of the recalled eggs, urging consumers to check their purchases.

Salmonella infection can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, vomiting, dehydration, and abdominal pain, typically resolving within a week. However, infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals may develop severe cases requiring hospitalization.

The CDC advises consumers to immediately dispose of or return the affected eggs and thoroughly clean and sanitize any kitchen surfaces that may have come into contact with them.

Expert Insights and Past Incidents

Food safety expert Dr. Michael Tyler emphasized that Salmonella outbreaks are a recurring issue when food hygiene standards are not strictly maintained. “Even organic or free-range products can pose risks to consumer safety if hygiene during production and distribution is inadequate,” he noted.

A similar incident occurred in 2018, when eggs from a North Carolina farm led to over 200 infections across the U.S., prompting the recall of millions of eggs.

Consumers are urged to stay informed and follow FDA and CDC guidelines to prevent further spread of the outbreak.
